Police investigation under way of Highspire fire company

Thursday, April 12, 2012 Highspire police are investigating the Citizens Fire Company, while borough council has demanded the resignation of two top fire company officers and an overhaul of the company's financial practices, Borough Manager John McHale said this morning.

No criminal charges have been filed, but the police probe is ongoing in consultation with the Dauphin County district attorney's Office, said McHale, who is also the borough police chief.

He said the probe began after concerns were raised in early March about the handling of money from a quarters bingo game the company began running as a fundraiser early this year. An account for the game was opened without authorization from the company's board of directors. McHale said.

Borough council delivered a letter to the company board earlier this month expressing concern about "irregularities" in the company's handling of finances. In that letter, council set five conditions for the borough to continue financial support of the company.
