Fire marshal says favoritism not issue in case response

Thursday, February 23, 2012 The state fire marshal insisted on Tuesday that favoritism played no role in the decision not to tell the public about the arson arrest of a paramedic whose husband is a senior fire school instructor, but acknowledged officials might have erred.

Addressing the Delaware Fire Prevention Commission, Fire Marshal Grover P. Ingle said the failure to report Margaret A. "Peggy" Brennan's October arrest -- in the second blaze at her home near Glasgow since 2008 -- did not "have anything to do with who the individuals are."

Later, during a break in the meeting, he reiterated that position in an interview with The News Journal but said, "We do make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. I don't know whether this was a mistake or not. There are issues around what is happening there." Ingle did not elaborate on the "issues," however.
